The Center for Community
Health Improvement and Wellness
East Hampton, NY • 1996
This storefront was developed into a Center for Health & Wellness to disseminate information on health programs and services available through Southampton Hospital.
The zig-zag design of this project divides the long narrow space into segments reflecting different uses. White Doric columns support split beams that house colored lights. The columns and beams are carried through the storefront glass to the front of the building, drawing the eye into the space.
“The adaptive reuse of traditional materials such as brick, slate, tin ceiling, wood floors, and painted mill work is a fine example of an economical project which is in harmony with its setting,” according to design judge William H. Paxson.
